Rate Card for services

I offer my services a few different ways depending on which is best for your particular job. Current revision of these terms, 1 January 2018:
  • $35.00 per hour.  I will charge you for those aspects of your research and retrieval that actually apply to my work on your project.  When there is significant "dead time" between the time I make a pull-request for you and the time I actually start to work on copying for your project, I do not include this time.  I can usually use this time to work on other projects.  I also do not charge you for any time associated with traveling to and from the NARA facility in College Park, MD or stopping for lunch, etc.
  • Actual Costs.  Under some circumstances, I would need to use a special scanner or copy machine in order to meet the NARA rules for protection of documents.  Any such costs that I incur will be passed directly on to you without markup.  For example,  If I use the Microfilm reader to actually print a paper copy of the image, the current charge by NARA is approximately $0.65 per page.
  • Main Archives Surcharge.  If I need to make a special trip to the Main Archives in downtown Washington, DC (Archives I), I incur charges for transportation, traveling or other lost time.  I will add an additional $20.00 for each round-trip that I need to make on behalf of working on your project. Normally I do most of my work at the College Park facility.  I no longer do research work at the Library of Congress.
  • Shipping Charges.  I will pass on to you any direct charges associated with mail, UPS, or FedEx delivery of your materials.
  • Things that are "no charge".  If I can use my own scanner and/or camera, I will only charge you for the time that is involved but there is no charge on a per-page basis for copying materials.  Additionally, there is no specific charge for sending your data on a DVD or CD (other than the actual materials and/or shipping charges).
  • Special Processing.  After I scan or photo-capture images working at the Archives, I normally bring them back to my home-office and prepare the images for your effective use.  This entails cropping and/or image enhancing that render your digital images to a format that is easy and convenient for you to use.  Under some circumstances this can be a time-consuming process.  If you prefer that I do not do this step, I am happy to send you the raw images with no special processing, and therefore, no special processing costs.
  • Minimum Charge.  For very small research and retrieval jobs my minimum charge is 2 hours ($70.00).
  • Special Situations.  For large jobs that expect to run at least $1,000 or more, we can negotiate special fixed prices or discounts for the large volume.  Each of these will be treated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Satisfaction Guaranteed.  If you are not satisfied with the work that I do for you, I will not charge you any more than the direct costs that I encounter such as NARA copier costs or shipping.
  • Payment Method.  When the job is completed to your satisfaction, I will send you an Invoice and you may pay by check.  If you prefer, you may pay me through PayPal and this will allow you to charge the work to a credit card.  You do not need to have a PayPal account in order to use this method. PayPal is particularly useful for international clients in view of the fact that there is no bother with exchange rates.  On large orders that spread out over a longer time, I will send Invoices for partial completion of the work.
